Background

The field of sensors research is exceptionally broad, spanning fundamental studies of transduction mechanisms and signal generation, advances in materials and interfaces, and innovations in device architecture, packaging, and systems integration. It also encompasses new manufacturing and fabrication approaches, emerging models for deployment in real-world settings, and scale-up challenges for robust, cost-effective, and sustainable production. Increasingly, sensors research sits at the heart of major societal and industrial priorities—supporting healthcare diagnostics and continuous monitoring, environmental surveillance and remediation, food and water safety, smart infrastructure and mobility, industrial process control, and next-generation human–machine interaction. The application space is vast, from chemical and biosensing to optical, electrochemical, wearable, implantable, and networked sensing, as well as data-rich sensor systems powered by AI and edge computing.

Due to the rapidly evolving and highly interdisciplinary nature of sensors science, it is progressively more difficult to identify the most critical barriers to translation, the major unrealized opportunities, and the challenges the community is not yet addressing—particularly around validation, reproducibility, calibration, data integrity, standardization, and real-world performance.

This Research Topic welcomes experience and high-quality contributions to the collection, exploring the latest developments across sensors research and offering clear perspectives on where the field should go next—creating a lasting resource that highlights the key challenges and opportunities shaping sensors science and technology.
