World Wildlife Day 2026 shines a spotlight on wild animals and plants, with this year's theme, “Medicinal and Aromatic Plants: Conserving Health, Heritage and Livelihoods.” To mark the day, we spoke with Dr Narel Paniagua Zambrana, an ethnobotanist whose career reflects both scientific leadership and the growing visibility of women in plant and environmental sciences. Her work explores how plant knowledge is learned, practiced, and passed on, often through gendered systems of care, healing, and cultural transmission.

Looking back at 2025, our fifth year publishing the Women in Science blog series, I feel an immense sense of pride in what we have achieved as a group. With 76 insightful articles published over the past five years, it is clear that women researchers continue to need a dedicated platform with readers who remain strongly engaged with their stories. In 2025, we featured nine interviews with researchers from across the globe, spanning from wildlife conservation to education, from climate change to LGBTQ+ rights, highlighting both the diversity of their work and the global relevance of their voices.

The announcement was made during a session at Science House, held on the Davos Promenade during the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting 2026. The tracker aims to empower policymakers, industry leaders, and researchers to move from discussion to action on innovation and competitiveness across Europe.

At Frontiers Science House, SPARK Microgravity GmbH revealed plans to build Europe’s first dedicated commercial orbital cancer lab. The lab will accelerate the path from discovery to therapy. In microgravity, researchers can run experiments that are impossible on Earth – including 3D tumor growth and revealing new drug targets.

At Frontiers Science House, Vanina Laurent Ledru, Chief Public Health and Government Affairs Officer of Institut Merieux and bioMerieux, warned that antimicrobial resistance (AMR) will be the next “pandemic” like COVID-19, killing more people than cancer by 2050. Peter Sands, Executive Director of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria; and Adèle James, Co-founder & Chief Technology Officer of Phagos, urged immediate global action against AMR.
